BASEBALL: Notre Dame left fielder headed to the NFL

Tate's decision should help Ball State in this year's matchup

University of Notre Dame wide receiver Golden Tate and quarterback Jimmy Clausen announced Monday they would forego their senior seasons and enter the NFL Draft this April.

Tate also played left field for the Fighting Irish, and while Ball State University has never faced Notre Dame in football, they meet annually in South Bend for baseball.

Tate's departure should be good news for the Cardinals. The speedy junior played twice against Ball State, starting last year's game. Tate went 2-for-2 with a triple and two runs in the Fighting Irish's 5-4 victory.

In the 2008 matchup, Tate entered the game as a pinch runner and did not have a plate appearance. During his baseball career, Tate hit .318 with 51 runs.

Ball State will visit Notre Dame on March 23 this season.
