Each week, The Daily News' sports crew picks its PPQ - the play, player and quote of the week.
But it doesn't stop there. With the help of our online voters, the weekly fan choice is also featured.
This week's best:
Player of the Week
Sara Hostetler, women's swimming and diving — the sophomore excelled this past weekend in the Cardinals' opening meets of the season, winning the 200-yard backstroke and the 100-yard butterfly against the University of Toledo and Bowling Green State University.
Play of the Week
Tanner Justice and Jeremy Hill, football — From the Wildcat formation, triggerback Eric Williams pitched the ball to quarterback Tanner Justice, who lined up as a wide receiver on the play. Justice found Hill open down the sideline and threw him a 35-yard touchdown to give the Cardinals a 17-12 lead in Saturday's 20-17 loss to Ohio.
Quote of the Week
"I'm pretty sure I'm as close to crazy as you can get without being medically defined as such." — Senior Sarah Kahe, who manages her time on campus in class and on the Ball State cross country, swimming and diving and track and field teams.
Fan Choice
Scott Kovanda, football — With four votes and 33 percent of the poll, Kovanda won the eighth fan choice vote of the year. Continuing the Ball State tradition of being labeled "Punter U," the redshirt freshman punted three times for a 46.7-yard average Saturday against Ohio, including a 62-yarder that was downed inside the Bobcats' 10-yard line.
