A jump rope routine, spoken word poetry, duets and more will be showcased at Ball State’s 33rd Annual Talent Search at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 17 in Emens Auditorium.

After auditioning, 19 finalists were chosen by a panel of judges who have some experience with the talents performed, such as music and dance teachers, said Catherine Burgess, president of the Homecoming Steering Committee.

The acts are divided into different categories such as female/male vocal, musical ensemble, instrumental, original composition and freestyle.

Judges give scores based on originality, level of talent, creativity and stage presence and winners in each category win $500. Out of the group of winners, an overall winner is chosen and awarded an additional $500.

All scholarships awarded during Talent Search are possible because of the Ball State University Alumni Association.

“I think alumni love Ball State so much they want to give back as much as they can so these students that have these gifts and are participating in homecoming activities can be rewarded,” said Talent Search chair Tyler Hostetler.

Hostetler said making it to the final show alone is an honor because of the incredible talent on Ball State’s campus.

He also said it's interesting to see the talents students are able to use through their majors, but the show is unique because not every student is studying what they are performing and they still “come together to do what they love.”

The free event is among the most competitive homecoming events, Hostetler said, because “it’s anyone’s show to take.”
