Ball State issues information alert of police action on Tillotson and Bethel

An emergency alert was delivered by Ball State emergency services at 1:40 p.m. on July 27. 

Update: The beeping sound in the Marathon gas station garbage can turned out to be nothing more than a smoke detector.

According emergency notification services, there are no ongoing threats in the area.


Earlier: Ball State University police were called in response to a "beeping sound in trash container next to a gas pump" at the Marathon gas station on Tillotson and Bethel Avenues.

Ball State emergency notification services issued an information only alert warning of police action at the intersection of Tillotson and Bethel Avenues.

The alert was sent out to students around 1:40 p.m., asking people to avoid the area.


The Delaware County Sheriff's Department Bomb Squad was called to the Marathon gas station at 2905 W. Bethel Ave.

Residents nearby are being notified of the situation and nearby buildings are being evacuated while most of the traffic is coming to a complete stop.

Around 40 minutes after the first notice, Ball State alerts said that there is a "suspicious package located behind the Marathon at Tillotson and Bethel."

According to dispatch traffic, the bomb squad's robot was deployed at 2:27 p.m.

Police are recommending that people stay away from the area. Tillotson is closed while Bethel westbound to Tillotson from McKinley is also closed.
