BASEBALL: Vitek named Preseason All-American at second base

Junior earns honor without playing a game in college at the position

Without ever playing a game at second base, Kolbrin Vitek is an All-American at the position.

Vitek was named second-team preseason All-American by Collegiate Baseball newspaper Tuesday. The junior is coming off an All-Mid-American Conference season. Vitek earned that recognition at the utility position after playing third base and pitching last year. He will move to second base when not on the mound this season.

During summer baseball, Vitek played exclusively at second base in the Great Lakes League, where he won the Triple Crown and won the Gary Henschen Award as the league's player of the year. Baseball American also tabbed him as the top prospect in the league.

Vitek is the only MAC player listed on any of three All-American teams sponsored by Louisville Slugger. Last year, he hit .389 with 67 RBI. On the hill, the right-hander was 4-3 with 56 strikeouts.

Collegiate Baseball also released their preseason poll this week, which included the Cardinals in the receiving votes category. Ball State was one of three MAC teams listed as receiving votes.

Ball State opens the season at the University of Arkansas on Feb. 19 with a three-game series.
