The excited screams of high-pitched little girls filled the air at the Ball State Gymnastic team’s first home meet of the season. Ball State’s unofficial cheerleading team could be seen standing in the front row of the bleachers, responding to different performances, with extra cheers for high-scoring routines from seniors Suki Pfister and Victoria Henry.

The 44th annual Unity Week came to a close on Sunday evening with the crowning of a new Miss Unity.The university’s Black Student Association (BSA) hosted the 56th annual Unity Pageant at Pruis Hall, with the theme running throughout the show of “A Night in New Orleans.”The spirit of New Orleans was shown in the opening dance number, which had jazz as the background music. Six women contested for Miss Unity, who presented their talents, community dedication and experience in front of a vocal crowd. Niecy Caldwell, a third-year dance major, was honored as Miss Unity. Gizelle Smedley, a fourth-year biology and pre-dentistry major, was the first runner-up; and Akailah Shepherd, a fourth-year elementary education major, was the second runner-up.Two other awards were given out: highest advertising sales and audience’s choice. Both awards were won by Taylor Johnson, a second-year marketing major.

With the CBS Sports Network in town for a nationally televised game, the teams picked to finish one and two in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) squared off Sunday evening. In it, the Ball State Cardinals (16-2, 6-0 MAC) came away with a 65-51 statement win over the MAC preseason favorite Toledo Rockets (12-4, 5-1 MAC).

History once again came full-circle, as Jan. 20 marked the annual Midwest Antique Fruit Jar and Bottle Club Convention. Collectors from all across the country loaded their prized possessions and token finds to display and sell in Muncie, Indiana. The Ball Mason Jar was patented in 1884 by the Ball Brothers, 34 years before they founded Ball State University.

Tinaishe Ndavazocheva’s 2023 debut season was among the finest for a first-year Cardinal in recent memory. The Zimbabwe native recorded 3.60 kills per set at a .402 hitting percentage last year, which earned him a spot on the Preseason All-Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) Team leading into the 2024 campaign.
