https://soundcloud.com/user-519363288/the-coven-s2e9-transgender-awareness-the-siege-on-baldurs-gate-and-the-trap-in-anime
Quick: think of a transgender video game character. You'll probably be pondering that for a while, because in gaming, trans characters are few and far between.
When there is representation - trans characters are reduced down to being "trap" jokes or are wrongly interpreted as being trans. Their creators didn't mean for them to be anything but "quirky."
When creators consciously create a transgender character, as seen when Amber Scott wrote Baldur's Gate: Siege of Drangonspear, included a four line dialogue with a blink-and-you'll miss them transwoman, things get complicated. People riot online, complain about SJWs, and make violent videos.
Anime invented the trans trap joke, but has a more prolific history of telling stories about transgender characters and handling them fairly well. Comics try to, and sometimes fail to properly represent the people they're writing about.
This week is Transgender Awareness Week, and November 20th is Transgender Day of Remembrance. Take an opportunity to give this podcast a listen and reflect on how our favorite nerdy media represents trans folk.

A ten dollar app?! Really, Nintendo?
This episode of Button Mash we talk about Nintendo's move into the mobile market: Super Mario Run comes out this December, and two more games are promised in the spring.
We also discuss the new updates, bad and good, for Pokemon Go and examine where the app should go from here with the new generation. Or how it can get players to keep playing.
Miitomo was fun for a little while, but did not have a lasting draw. What went wrong? Will this be true for Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem for mobile?
Give us a listen and get in the know about Nintendo's new strategies in the mobile market.

https://soundcloud.com/user-519363288/the-coven-you-might-get-bitten-women-in-the-comics-industry
The Coven gathers to stir up the cauldron of issues surrounding women in the comics industry, especially with the Chelsea Cain situation.
It's already obvious that the lion's share of caped crusaders or masked heroes are male - so it's no surprise when we find that there aren't many ladies writing comics. Unfortunately, where we can find examples of women working in comics they're often harassed on Twitter, another thing we've come to expect, and sexually harassed in their own workplace.
The comics industry continually proves itself to be a dangerous place for women: they might be threatened with rape online, bitten in their office, or fired because men doing the harassing and biting can't control themselves.
Share in our shock and outrage at the current state of women in comics and rejoice in how far we've come in terms of diversity in one of our favorite nerdy medias.
But mostly be scared of Bitey the Clown.

This week on Button Mash, we say farewell to Vine, a platform that supplied many with memes and laughs.
Twitter has made a lot of tough business decisions as of late, but on this podcast we focus on the infamous issue of cyberbullying on the platform and how it affects all the nerdy things we love, and the communities we're a part of.
Tumblr also is known to have its own special kind of issues: self-deprecation culture and its lack of accessibility for advertisers.
We explore all this and more on this media savvy episode of Button Mash.

https://soundcloud.com/user-519363288/anime-a-team-s3e7-internationally-trying-to-hard-anime-influence-on-america
This week on the Anime A-Team, we go international and travel from Japan, to America, and, surprisingly, to France. All these places have connections to anime.
Are cartoons like Avatar: The Last Airbender technically anime because they're stylized off of Japan's perfected art form? What about shows that have emulated anime in a less than ideal, and frankly cringe-y?
Animators and authors everywhere have been inspired by anime. Join us as we examine where that has succeeded and where that has failed.

https://soundcloud.com/user-519363288/the-coven-s2e7-waifus-no-laifu-and-consent
This week on The Coven, we stir up the cauldron of issues within visual novels, and more infamously, dating sims.
Despite common mechanics, there are differences between dating sims and visual novels. Within dating sims lie we three witches' concern about sexualization of women and underage girls, issues with consent, and whether or not these games foster a lack of empathy for women.
It's been proven that video games don't inherently make gamers violent--but could sexist games make their players sexist?
We also have an enchanting exchange on the issue ravaging Japan: no one wants to have sex. And virtual girlfriends might be to blame.

Japan has horror down to an art form, whether that's expressed in some of the most famous horror films of all time, like The Grudge or The Ring, or in anime and manga.
On this spooky special, we talk about the scariest--and goriest--anime available, whether that's the horrors of Higurashi, story of Another, or instant classics like Shiki and Corpse Party.
We explore where Japan got it's inspiration for such frightening tales from it's own folklore and urban legends, and question why horror anime often rivals the Saw franchise when it comes to utilizing gore.
