As I have stated in previous reviews, I am an avid fan of everything Life is Strange. From the original game itself, to Before the Storm and The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit, to the first two episodes of the sequel, I have happily consumed any media DONTNOD Entertainment releases that is even remotely Life is Strange related.
And then came the third episode of Life is Strange 2.
After waiting about three months for a new installment, I’d had plenty of time to build up my hopes. When it finally came out, I settled down in front of my computer, ready to spend the next three to four hours living in the universe that I had come to know and love.
But that wasn’t what happened. I found myself only briefly living in the beautiful Life is Strange world before being thrown into what felt like a mediocre replica. Everything just felt ever-so-slightly off, to the point where it wasn’t a complete disappointment, but it certainly didn’t feel like I was spending time in my favorite video game world anymore. Compared to the episodes before it, Life is Strange 2: Episode 3 is clearly a weak link in the story as a whole.

Disclaimer: This review contains spoilers for the show The Umbrella Academy.
As someone who believes today’s media and pop culture is far oversaturated with superheroes and superhero films/shows that frankly start to blend together after a short while, I was not expecting much out of Netflix’s new show, The Umbrella Academy. I was expecting a bunch of superheroes with virtually the same character traits running around, making quips and killing bad guys. However, The Umbrella Academy far exceeded my expectations by crafting a unique story with characters who made the superhero genre feel fresh again.
The Umbrella Academy follows a family of superheroes as they come together after their father’s death. When their brother who has been missing for years suddenly shows up and reveals that it is up to them to stop the impending apocalypse, the family must put aside their grievances with one another and work together to save the world.

After playing both The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit and Life is Strange 2: Episode 1, I was counting down the days until the release of the next installment of Life is Strange 2, which is where developers revealed that the two stories would finally intertwine. As much as I enjoyed both of the previous games mentioned, I found myself worrying that the developers would make some kind of wild and contrived stretch to combine these completely different stories. However, DONTNOD had obviously thought through exactly how they wanted to put these different characters together, and by introducing not only Chris and Charles from The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit, but also the lovely characters of Claire and Stephen, who are Sean and Daniel’s grandparents, the developers create a lovable and believable ensemble for a beautiful and heart-wrenching story.

As a huge fan of Starkid Productions, I anxiously anticipated the YouTube release of their newest show, The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals, for months. I was honestly prepared to be disappointed; after their last show, Firebringer, I wasn’t expecting much. However, this show exceeded my expectations and evoked the infectiously fun and campy feeling of earlier Starkid shows like A Very Potter Musical and Starship.

As someone who grew up on the music of Queen, The Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppelin, I was ecstatic when I heard about Bohemian Rhapsody. It looked like it would be an epic tribute to a legendary band and Freddie Mercury specifically. After anticipating its release for almost a year, there had been plenty of time to build up my expectations for the film. In many ways, this film surprised me, and while it met or surpassed my expectations in most areas, there were moments where it definitely did not live up to my standards, detracting from what could have been a great film.

Even though I had relatively low expectations for Just Dance 2019, I was still quite excited to play it. I am definitely a fan of dance games and was hoping for nothing more than an “expansion pack” to previous Just Dance games with new and current songs. In some ways, this game definitely surpassed my expectations, but had some major flaws in gameplay that were definitely disappointing. However, it definitely fulfilled its purpose as a party game and had a lot of fun content that is enjoyable for fans and casual players alike.

As an avid fan of Life is Strange, I was surprisingly nervous to pick up the sequel. I wanted to be enthralled and drawn in the way I was with the first game, and was terrified that the sequel would be a half-hearted attempt to recreate everything that the first one had done so wonderfully. However, Life is Strange 2 delivers for fans of the series and welcomes them back into the Life is Strange universe without becoming a recreation of the first game.
