“I knew this was coming,” Michael Lewis said.
Michael Lewis was nervous walking into Worthen Arena Saturday morning. Although the second-year head coach was coming off a 61-point win over Goshen to start the new campaign, he knew Ball State had a significantly larger challenge ahead in Old Dominion.\
Before those who walk into the Muncie Mission’s pantry see a pink, green, orange or yellow number lying on sign-up sheets on a plastic foldable table, they see Charlotte McKnight’s blue eyes behind thin-rimmed, silver glasses.
Nearly an hour after the 3,071 reported fans left their red seats in Worthen Arena, one man remained in uniform, putting shots up.
“I hurt for our football team right now,” Mike Neu said.
As music by artists such as Drake, Lil Baby, 21 Savage and more played from personal speakers on the floor of Worthen Arena, smiles shined brighter than the lighting setup for Ball State men’s basketball’s media day.
Mike Neu has coached 89 games as head coach of Ball State football, 58 of which coming against Mid-American Conference (MAC) schools. However, in his eight seasons as the Cardinals’ leader, he has never faced Bowling Green.
From the opening coin toss, the tone was set for a tense game at Scheumann Stadium. Homecoming festivities aside, Ball State football has its back against the wall for the remainder of the season as one more loss knocks the Cardinals out of contention for bowl eligibility.
There weren’t many people in the silver bleachers at Scheumann Stadium for Ball State’s first home game of October. It was cold, windy and rainy, and that’s not even mentioning the fact that the home team was 1-5 going into their contest against the defending conference champion Toledo Rockets.

When Sidney Houston Jr. sacked the Eagles’ sixth-year quarterback Davis Brin with 13:04 left in the third quarter of Ball State football’s final non-conference matchup against Georgia Southern, Houston Jr. celebrated by strumming an air guitar.
As he walked out of Scheumann Stadium pumping his fist in the air, celebrating a 45-7 win over Indiana State last Saturday, Mike Neu was confident heading into the Cardinals’ next matchup.
While Ball State didn’t have the successful year many around the program hoped for in 2022, running back Carson Steele did. Finishing the year with 1556 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns, Steele earned All-Mid-American Conference (MAC) First Team honors and was perhaps the brightest light in a 5-7 season.
In the second quarter of Ball State football’s home opener against Indiana State, Rico Barfield swung to the left of freshman quarterback Kadin Semonza on a screen route.
After the first two games of the season, Ball State football is 0-2 with a combined 89-17 deficit. Granted, the Cardinals have arguably had the toughest opening two weeks of a season in program history, but the red and white find themselves at a crossroads moving forward.
