No. 1 seed Ball State Baseball (39-17, 32-7 MAC) freshman designated hitter Hunter Dobbins was in the batting cage behind the Cardinals dugout every chance he could during their first game of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Baseball Championship Tournament against No. 4 seed Ohio (29-23, 21-15 MAC).

In the bottom of the first inning of Ball State Baseball's (38-17, 32-7 MAC) first Mid-American Conference (MAC) Championship Tournament game against Ohio (29-22, 21-15 MAC), fifth-year first baseman Trenton Quartermaine hit a RBI single to score fifth-year center fielder Amir Wright, who hit a double off the fence in the Cardinals first at-bat of the game. Even after fifth-year right fielder Nick Powell's out to follow Quartermaine's hit to put Ball State up 1-0, when freshman designated hitter Hunter Dobbins stepped to the plate, Cardinal fans at Ball Diamond at First Merchant's Ballpark Complex in Muncie, Indiana, were still enthusiastic.

For Ball State Baseball, the 2022 season has been fueled by disappointment of years past. In 2021, the Cardinals finished 38-18, 29-11 in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) and were one of the first four out of the NCAA Regionals after they finished second in their conference.

For the first time since 2014, Ball State Baseball (38-17, 32-7 MAC) are Mid-American Conference (MAC) Regular Season Champions. Heading into their May 19-21 series against Miami (Ohio) (23-33, 18-22 MAC), the Cardinals were in second place in the conference, however, they swept the Redhawks in four games while Central Michigan (38-16, 30-7 MAC) lost the first game of their series over the weekend.

Just like that, first place in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) slips out of Ball State Baseball’s (34-17, 28-7 MAC) hands. Going into May 13-15’s series against Ohio (26-21, 18-14 MAC), the Cardinals won 21 of their last 24 games, including a four-game series sweep against former first-place Central Michigan (36-15, 28-6 MAC).

For Yorktown Baseball (15-7), May 14 was a day with over 10 hours spent on Yorktown High School’s campus. From arriving at Tiger Field at 7:45 a.m. to get the field and their skills ready for their 10 a.m. game against Wapahani (17-4), to leaving with the Delaware County Baseball Tournament trophy in hand around 6 p.m.

Tiger Field at Yorktown High School plays host to the Delaware County Baseball Tournament every year and 2022’s tournament opened up with two very different games. Game one, between the No. 2 in 2A baseball Wapahani Raiders (17-3) and Cowan Blackhawks (9-8) ended an inning early, and game two featured two senior pitchers committed to play collegiate baseball face off in a contest that came down to the final out, pitting the Delta Eagles (5-14) and Wes-Del Warriors (10-8) against one another.

Although Kent State Baseball (18-26,13-17 MAC) picked up a 5-4 win over Ball State (32-15, 26-5 MAC) on a walk-off single by sophomore shortstop Mike McNamara May 9 to win their first game of May 7-9’s four-game series, the Cardinals have won 21 of their last 24 games.

Heading into their May 7-8 series against the Akron Zips (18-32, 13-16 MAC), Ball State Softball (22-31, 15-14 MAC) still had a chance to get into May 12-14’s Mid-American Conference (MAC) Tournament. The top four teams in the MAC are involved in said tournament and the Cardinals sat at fifth.
