Jordan Otero used to think studying for his bachelor’s degree was pointless. When he was a freshman and sophomore at Ball State, he said he struggled in his classes because he thought they would be easier than they actually were.

Julie Griffith, appointed to the Ball State Board of Trustees by Gov. Eric Holcomb in November 2021, attended her first meeting as a trustee Jan. 28. The board voted to establish a new Employee Development Wellbeing Committee on the Board of Trustees, which will review inclusive excellence and faculty retention.
Eric Salazar knew after a high school jazz band bass clarinet solo what he wanted to do with the rest of his life. After his Brownsburg High School band director Joe Vrabec credited him as the reason the band won a judge’s choice award from a 2007 Purdue University jazz competition, he said he wanted to become a music performer to “help people feel their feelings and help people through music.”

Robert Dirden, Ball State assistant teaching professor of theatre, walked through the doors of the Muncie Civic Theatre as a 16-year-old in 1989 and wanted to help create sets and design shows. With theater experience from Muncie Central High School and a calling to create, Dirden said he helped the theater with whatever it needed, including painting sets, building props and sewing costumes.
Senior nursing major Kate Mahnensmith participated in the third Bed Race of her college career Oct. 22. Mahnensmith, a member of Ball State’s all-girl cheerleading squad, won the independent female category with her team.

For Jacqueline Hanoman, executive director of the Ross Community Center, well-rounded programming goes beyond after-school crafts and youth baseball. Since joining the Ross Community Center in 2015, she has put an emphasis on expanding programming for multiple age groups.
Ball State’s Board of Trustees considered reasons for about an 8 percent decrease in freshman enrollment for the 2021-22 school year at its meeting Oct. 1. Paula Luff, vice president for enrollment, planning and management, said students weren’t able to visit campus in-person due to the COVID-19 pandemic when deciding whether to enroll for the fall.
