Recollecting on my own experience at Ball State, as a Black woman and a first-generation college student, no one warned me in advance that I would and should be responsible for making my education my own.
The story of Black students at Ball State is one of perseverance — it is a story of the Black students’ tenacity and faith in themselves, each other and the university.
With all of the news and happenings with COVID-19, this is a scary time for students. We are unsure about what our future is going to look like: will we transition well to all online learning? Will we get to keep our jobs? Will we be able to pay for food, for housing, for other necessities? Will we graduate on time?
We at Ball State are aware of the unfortunate incident that occurred on our campus. One of the participants was Dr. Shaheen Borna.
When I was born in the year 1997, the United States was already involved in multiple combat zones around the world.
Freedom of speech, enshrined as the first of many freedoms guaranteed under the Bill of Rights in our Constitution, is just as important today as it was back in 1791. President Trump’s executive order to ensure that universities and institutions promote free speech is not a government overreach, but rather a protection of one of our most basic human rights.
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
The article "Honoring Ball State women accomplishments" is an inspiring and fitting dedication to look back at the impact women have had on the University. There's so many strong examples of women in Ball's history – both the state university and the family – but I think my favorite are Bertha Crosley Ball and Sarah Rogers Ball.
Measles was least expected in the United States. So, what has happened? Did we become a war zone? Do we have low resources? We ran short of vaccines? Or there is a sudden genetic change in the American population that makes us vulnerable to measles like infections?
Our Republican majority legislature should shift its focus from increasing the availability of guns in public places to sensible gun regulation such as the three bills in committee that would require background checks on all gun sales in Indiana.

Hates crimes are on the rise across the country, and that is being felt right here in Indiana. An FBI report released in 2017 states that hate crimes rose 17 percent compared to the prior year.

I was disheartened to read Rick Hall’s statement concerning the University’s relationship with John Schnatter.
As a former student and educator at Ball State, I’m deeply saddened and embarrassed by your letter.
