Throughout the 2008 college football season, Co-Sports Editors Vinnie Lopes and Kyle Shaner and a guest picker will pick the winners of Mid-American Conference football games. After fours week of picking the games' winners, Lopes leads the competition with a 37-4 record.

Costumed teams race down Riverside

Teams of pirates, babies, Quail Men and more hurtled down Riverside Avenue at noon Friday as part of the Homecoming celebration at Ball State University. Sociology major Sarah Austin competed in the Bed Races for the first time as a member of the Park Hall pirates.

SOCCER: 'Scared' Cardinals lose 3-0 in first MAC game of season

Since Michael Lovett was hired as the Ball State University soccer coach in March, he said he has never seen his team with an attitude like it had Friday. "We just played very scared [Friday], which was unfortunate because I think we are a very good team," the first-year coach said of his team's 3-0 loss against Central Michigan University.

Stan Parrish skimmed through his play sheet, searching for the perfect offensive formation. "Bunch right," Parrish shouted into his headset, as the fourth-quarter clock dwindled against the University of Michigan two years ago. The formation was relayed to quarterback Nate Davis, who lined the Cardinals' offense into the formation its offensive coordinator called.

Ball State University women's tennis coach Kathy Bull was not focused on the wins and losses after day one of the Ball State Invitational. Rather it was what her team can do to improve for today's day two. "I had the players sit in a circle and say something they did well in their matches and then something they could improve on," Bull said, "Everyone was having the same weaknesses.

Every Friday a group of Ball State University students gives out free hugs at the Scramble Light. During the last two years, I have done my best to get a hug every Friday. Once my last class is done for the week, I make my way to Riverside Avenue to receive a hug from someone I have never met or seen before.

After a long week of practice, the Ball State University field hockey team hopes its struggles from the non-conference season are left in the past. The Cardinals will travel to Springfield, Mo., to open the Mid-American Conference season against Missouri State University on Sunday.

Chase Jones believes nobody wearing body paint is expected to be sane. In high school, Jones was not allowed to paint. When he came to Ball State, he immediately wanted to try it. "I thought it was a good way to show school spirit," he said. He painted his entire face and body and spelled out "Go.

Better bring your best singing voices to Saturday's Homecoming parade. This year you won't hear the clamorous sounds of Ball State University's marching band drowning out the off-key chorus from the sidewalks during the fight song. Anyone who has seen "The Music Man" knows it's just not a parade without the brassy sounds of trombones and cornets, but this year we'll have to make an exception.
