Splendid sounds

The Ball State Campus Band performed Tuesday at Sursa Hall. A crowd of around 100 people turned out to watch the concert. "I thought it went really well," conductor Don Linn said, "I thought they sounded really great." According to Linn, the Campus Band is a group of mostly nonmusic major students who meet once a week.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Newell to fans: Come support the Cards

Anthony Newell remembers running onto the Worthen Arena court for warm-ups as a freshman and being greeted by a sellout crowd of 11,500 fans against Indiana University on Dec. 30, 2005. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Ball State guard receives MAC award

Ball State University's women's basketball guard Porchia Green has been named Player of the Week for the Mid-America Conference Monday. Green scored 28 points against the University of Evansville on Friday. She shot nine of 18 during the game and had a total of nine rebounds against Evansville.

Ball St. appoints new VP

Ball State University's vice president for Information Technology has a permanent seat with the other seven members of President Jo Ann Gora's cabinet, according to an e-mail letter Gora sent out Monday. Philip Repp, who had been serving as interim vice president for Information Technology, will take over the permanent position, which oversees University Computing Services, University Libraries and University Teleplex, as well as several supporting technology areas at Ball State.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Newell wins MAC West Player of the Week

Ball State University men's basketball senior forward Anthony Newell was selected Monday as the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week. It is the second MAC West Player of the Week selection for Newell this season and fourth overall selection in his career.

FOOTBALL: Davis named finalist for Manning Award

After leading his team to a 12-0 start and earning the Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Year award, Ball State University quarterback Nate Davis received another honor Monday. The junior was named one of 10 finalists for the Manning Award, which is given to the nation's best quarterback in college football.

A Ball State University track and field athlete was arrested Saturday after she reportedly scratched a police officer's hand and cursed at him, according to the Muncie Police Department. Lanae Stovall, a senior member of the track and field team, was arrested on the preliminary charge of resisting law enforcement about 12:50 a.

Ex-BSU student's plea hearing continued

The guilty plea hearing for a former Ball State University student arrested in connection with a 2007 assault has been continued for the second time. Ashley Kirkman, 21, is scheduled to plea to Delaware County Judge Robert Barnet on Jan. 22 in Circuit Court 3, according to court documents.

FIELD HOCKEY: MAC honors Cardinals for academics

For the second consecutive year forward Brooke MacGillivary of the Ball State University field hockey team was named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Field Hockey Team. The MAC announced Tuesday MacGillivary was one of 12 student-athletes from the conference to receive the honors.

FOOTBALL: Hoke wins regional coach of year award

After leading his team to a 12-0 regular season record, Ball State University football coach Brady Hoke was named the American Football Coaches Association Football Bowl Subdivision Region 3 Coach of the Year on Tuesday. It was the first time Hoke, who is in his sixth season as the Cardinals' coach, won the regional award.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards prepare for Raiders' invasion

With only two days between games, Ball State University's women's basketball team will play Wright State University after a short turnaround at 7 p.m. in Worthen Arena. Ball State lost its last game against the University of Louisville 82-51. Coach Kelly Packard said the team is looking forward to playing back at Ball State for a game.

Gun control has always been a bland issue for me. I never got heated over whether I had the right to carry a weapon in my backpack. Of course, the idea of the person sitting right next to me packin' heat, as they say on the streets, petrifies me, but that issue has never slapped me in the face like it has recently here at Ball State University.

BASEBALL: Vitek placed on player of the year watch list

Baseball season doesn't start for more than two months, but Ball State University's first preseason accolade was announced Monday. Sophomore pitcher/infielder Kolbrin Vitek was named to the 2009 Brooks Wallace Player of the Year Award Watch List. The Wallace Award is sponsored by the College Baseball Foundation and the College Baseball Hall of Fame.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards lose to No. 14 Purdue 68-39

The Ball State University men's basketball team trails No. 14 Purdue University 30-17 at halftime in Worthen Arena. Senior forward Anthony Newell has six points to lead the Cardinals (4-3), who are 2-6 all-time against the Boilermakers. Senior guard Laron Frazier has five points, while freshman center Jarrod Jones has four points and four rebounds.

American Idol stars to perform at Emens

Ruben Studdard and Frenchie Davis of American Idol will perform in the Broadway musical "Ain't Misbehavin'" at 7:30 p.m. in John R. Emens Auditorium. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the musical, which is about the spirit of legendary jazz musician Fats Waller and the sound of Harlem in the 1930s.
