As music by artists such as Drake, Lil Baby, 21 Savage and more played from personal speakers on the floor of Worthen Arena, smiles shined brighter than the lighting setup for Ball State men’s basketball’s media day.
PARKER CITY, IND - Wes-Del started this season with changes that included a new field and a new attitude. Friday night, the season came to a close with a sectional semifinal loss to Monroe Central.
The Burris Owls finished the regular season with a 23-4 record. However, that wasn’t the goal for the 2023 campaign. “[The team] has a really good mental state for the most part,” Owls’ head coach Jim Craig said. “These guys were pretty good about the highs and lows of the season.”However, that wasn’t the goal for the 2023 campaign. The Owls had not won a sectional championship since the 2014 season. Coming into Sectional 40 hosted by Wes-Del High School, the Owls were ready. In their first two games, the Owls swept Winchester Community and Alexandria Monroe 3-0.Then it was time for the finale. After three sets of dominant volleyball, the Owls swept Lapel 3-0 to take Burris’ first sectional championship in nine years. “It’s pretty crazy,” senior Aubrey Miller said. “We’ve wanted this forever and it’s amazing to actually do it.”Burris started the first set with fire as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead, forcing a timeout by Lapel. Following the timeout, the Bulldogs started to fight back as they only trailed 17-16 later in the set. However, the Owls went on to win the set 25-20. The second set started very similar to the first as the Owls led 7-2. Then the Owls put pedal to the metal as they went on to win the set 25-11. The final set of the night was very similar as Burris gave it everything, winning the set 25-12 and taking the match. “It’s a little bit of a relief,” Craig said. [Burris] hasn’t pulled out a sectional [championship] for a while. The kids have been homing in on this all year.”One of the key pieces for the Owls has been junior Lilly Howell. She leads the team in kills per game (3.9) and total blocks (47). “We all love each other,” Howell said. “We are one big family and I think that means a lot. We have the skills to back it up. We have great defense, great setters, great hitters, and great everything.” While Craig believes everyone did well, he was impressed with freshman Ja’Maria Jackson. “Tonight was a coming-of-age moment for her, “he said. “She just got up and smoked the ball. I was surprised they didn’t have double blockers on her.” Another piece that has aided the Owls has been the seven seniors. To Howell, they have been the ones to keep everything in check.“They have been great leaders,” she said. “They have shown us how to get it done.” The Owls will move on to the Regional 10 at Elwood High School. As of now, the Owls will wait to see who they play. To continue the success, Miller believes that they need to remember what has gotten them this far. “[We need to] not get down,” she said. “When points are critical, they are critical. We need to ball out the entire game no matter the score and no matter how everyone is playing. Energy is everything.” Other sectional results around the county included Daleville winning the Sectional 55 Championship, Yorktown winning the Sectional 8 Championship, and Delta falling to New Castle in Sectional 24. Ball State has had to play with rough weather in their last two Mid-American Conference (MAC) games. There is another similarity as both ended with the Cardinals falling. Most recently, it was a 13-6 loss to Toledo.
The Delta Eagles started off the 2023 season 4-0. However, the last five weeks of the season have not been kind as the Eagles are 1-4. Their latest loss was in Friday’s regular-season finale against New Palestine, where the Eagles fell 35-7.
Before I get to the main topic of this column, I guess I should admit that I was wrong. On Saturday, Oct. 7, it was announced that the Colts and Jonathan Taylor agreed on a three-year contract extension.
YORKTOWN, IND - Yorktown volleyball has had some success in the last few seasons. In 2022, the Tigers won their ninth straight Delaware County Championship and was runner-up at the state finals.
After falling to Eastern Michigan 24-10 on Saturday afternoon, Ball State is now 1-5 for the first time since 2014. “It comes down to execution,” Cardinals' head coach Mike Neu said. “I thought we had a couple of opportunities and we missed some, so we'll just have to keep attacking that.”During the Mid-American Conference (MAC) matchup in Ypsilanti, Michigan, the Cardinals saw a multitude of things that could have changed the outcome of this game. While the Cardinals have attempted to dissolve the issues of unnecessary penalties, they made their appearance once again. “You never want to get penalties and in certain situations, that hurts us a lot,” sophomore tight end Tanner Koziol said. “...Whether it's a pre-snap penalty or post-snap penalty, [we need to] continue to lock in and play clean football.”Koziol has been one of the Cardinals' go-to targets. Today's game was no different. He finished the contest with six receptions for 48 yards. He also scored Ball State’s lone touchdown. While Koziol and redshirt sophomore running back Marquez Cooper (62 receiving yards, 48 rushing yards) both had positive days offensively, there were still issues. Ball State’s pass game had some struggles against the Eagles (3-3, 1-1 MAC) as they failed to move the ball through the air. “We just weren't executing plays at the end of the day,” Koziol said. “It was just execution and [not finishing] finishing the plays.” Graduate student quarterback Layne Hatcher went 20-for-33 with 132 passing yards and one touchdown pass. Ball State also used redshirt sophomore quarterback Kiael Kelly during the game. He only threw two passes, but his feet were on full display as he rushed for 104 yards. Even though freshman quarterback Kadin Semonza has had some playing time this season, Neu made today's game plan for Hatcher and Kelly. When it came to the defense, there were some positives. Redshirt senior linebacker Cole Pierce led the Cardinals with ten tackles (seven assisted, three solo) and forced a fumble. “I think we all give great effort in every single game,” Pierce said. “...I think [our defense is] continuing to trust each other more and communicate better and better every single week. I think we just need to continue to do that and stay positive and look on the bright side of things to continue to get better.”While Ball State had issues in multiple moments of the game, the second quarter was a period when the Cardinals struggled. But Ball State has seen that throughout the year as opponents have outscored them 96-24 in the quarter. “We're not executing,” Neu said. “There's no other way to slice it up. We're just not executing and not playing the way we need to play there in the second quarter.” Another key factor for Ball State is the team’s health. While they have lost many key pieces like senior linebacker Clayton Cole and redshirt sophomore tight end Brady Hunt, Koziol doesn't use that as an excuse. “We're all division one football players,” he said. “We got recruited to play here for a reason.” With the loss, the Cardinals are now 0-2 in the MAC. To improve, Neu believes that watching tape can lift the Cardinals out of their slump. “We look at everything,” he said. “...We've discussed that we look at everything. There are no excuses and I'm not making any excuses. It's not good enough.” Ball State will attempt to acquire their first MAC win as they face Toledo in Muncie on Saturday, Oct. 14. The game is set to begin at 2 p.m.Contact Zach Carter with comments at zachary.carter@bsu.edu or on X @ZachCarter85.

GASTON, IND - The last few seasons of Wes-Del football have been ones that fans might try to forget. However, in that period of unwanted results, there has been one key factor.
I wrote after last week’s win against the Ravens that the Colts were going to lose the success that they started the 2023 campaign with. We all know it’s coming because good things don’t last forever, especially for the Horseshoe. I think it started with a guy named Andrew…
Coming into the 2023 Delaware County Tournament, the Yorktown Tigers were tied with the Wapahani Raiders for the most county titles (16).
On senior night, most teams honor their senior players at their game or match. For Yorktown football, it’s a little different. Besides the football players, cheerleaders, and dancers, all of the seniors from other fall sports were celebrated before Yorktown’s game against Hoosier-Heritage Conference opponent Greenfield-Central.
Ball State led Toledo with ten seconds left in the second half. But after the ball went out of bounds, the Rockets had possession next to the Cardinals’ goal and were trying to tie the match.
I woke up Sunday morning expecting to sit through a Colts blowout loss against the team that took over the Horseshoes’ original stomping grounds. Yet, that didn’t happen.

While the Delta Eagles have been accustomed to high scoring games this season, Friday night’s homecoming contest was the complete opposite
Ball State had the 2-1 lead at the 73:48 mark of the contest at Briners Sports Complex, but the Cardinals were looking for one more to ensure the victory.
