https://soundcloud.com/user-519363288/the-coven-women-arent-funny-and-its-evolutions-fault
Women just aren't funny. Women aren't as funny as men. And pretty women can't be funny at all. These are the facts of life, article after article has claimed. Science backs this up: men have to be funny or else they'll be forever alone.
Why do people think women aren't funny? Especially within a society that highly values humor in romantic partners.
Is it because we have poor examples of female comedians (Amy Schumer?) Or because no one wants to hear crude humor from a lady?
With the rise of memes and nihilistic humor, maybe we're post-gender when it comes to funnies. No matter what kind of jokes tickle your funny bone, this podcast is a hilarious listen!

The Coven isn't like other podcasts... it's much worse.
This week The Coven returns to it's safe space (?) of the podcast lounge to discuss safe spaces, trigger warnings, and self-deprecation culture. This is especially relevant for college students like us, but are trigger warnings becoming relevant to media?
Does media using trigger warnings ruin surprises? Save assault survivors? Do safe spaces shelter and destroy freedom of speech? Protect others? Is calling yourself trash good for you?
Join us as we peer into the cauldron of Internet culture, Tumblr's funniest posts, and our abysmal self-esteem.

https://soundcloud.com/user-519363288/the-anime-a-s3e8-the-team-tackles-sports-and-exclaimation-points
We finally do it on this episode of the A-Team: we address the undeniable hit of the winter season: Yuri!!! On Ice, along with the other hit sports anime everyone is talking about: Keijo!!!!!!!! and All-Out!!
Other than their narratives being centered around a sport and their titles having excessive exclamation points, these anime couldn't be any more different. They are remarkable examples of the different methods anime tackles sport-centered storylines.
Something else that connects vastly different sports anime: homoerotic undertones? Men embracing, men staring at each other, and full contact sports, we talk about it all.
We look at these new sports darlings and how sports anime has faired in the past on this high octane episode of The Anime A-Team!

https://soundcloud.com/user-519363288/the-coven-s2e10-not-so-magical-cultural-appropriation-of-native-peoples
While basking in your post-holiday food coma, give this magical episode of The Coven a listen: we're talking cultural appropriation and how JK Rowling might be guilty.
Obviously Native Americans are often misrepresented in media (looking at you, Disney) but this also carries over to written works. Namely A History of North American Magic, written by JK Rowling for Pottermore in anticipation of magical adventures in America.
Why was her main character not native? Is it okay to refer to Native American culture under umbrella terms? Did our queen JK Rowling get lazy in researching and representing America?
We discuss all this and ruin your childhood on this episode of The Coven.

Admit it: we've all dreamed of designing our very own game. Today on our Byte Interview Special, we talk to two game designers who made that dream come true: Sarah Bishop and Becca Turgeon.
In our interview, we break down the complicated process of design and publishing, and Sarah and Becca's unique experience in creating their mobile game for children, Grasshopper's Winter.
Grasshopper's Winter is "an all-ages mobile app about bugs and their busy lives, where players tap and hop their way through obstacles to guide Little Hopper through the winter" that Sarah and Becca created through the RIT Magic Center.
Curious about game design and where to start? Sarah and Becca walk us through game development from art direction to unexpected paperwork.

https://soundcloud.com/user-519363288/the-coven-s2e9-transgender-awareness-the-siege-on-baldurs-gate-and-the-trap-in-anime
Quick: think of a transgender video game character. You'll probably be pondering that for a while, because in gaming, trans characters are few and far between.
When there is representation - trans characters are reduced down to being "trap" jokes or are wrongly interpreted as being trans. Their creators didn't mean for them to be anything but "quirky."
When creators consciously create a transgender character, as seen when Amber Scott wrote Baldur's Gate: Siege of Drangonspear, included a four line dialogue with a blink-and-you'll miss them transwoman, things get complicated. People riot online, complain about SJWs, and make violent videos.
Anime invented the trans trap joke, but has a more prolific history of telling stories about transgender characters and handling them fairly well. Comics try to, and sometimes fail to properly represent the people they're writing about.
This week is Transgender Awareness Week, and November 20th is Transgender Day of Remembrance. Take an opportunity to give this podcast a listen and reflect on how our favorite nerdy media represents trans folk.

A ten dollar app?! Really, Nintendo?
This episode of Button Mash we talk about Nintendo's move into the mobile market: Super Mario Run comes out this December, and two more games are promised in the spring.
We also discuss the new updates, bad and good, for Pokemon Go and examine where the app should go from here with the new generation. Or how it can get players to keep playing.
Miitomo was fun for a little while, but did not have a lasting draw. What went wrong? Will this be true for Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem for mobile?

https://soundcloud.com/user-519363288/the-coven-you-might-get-bitten-women-in-the-comics-industry
The Coven gathers to stir up the cauldron of issues surrounding women in the comics industry, especially with the Chelsea Cain situation.
It's already obvious that the lion's share of caped crusaders or masked heroes are male - so it's no surprise when we find that there aren't many ladies writing comics. Unfortunately, where we can find examples of women working in comics they're often harassed on Twitter, another thing we've come to expect, and sexually harassed in their own workplace.
The comics industry continually proves itself to be a dangerous place for women: they might be threatened with rape online, bitten in their office, or fired because men doing the harassing and biting can't control themselves.
Share in our shock and outrage at the current state of women in comics and rejoice in how far we've come in terms of diversity in one of our favorite nerdy medias.
But mostly be scared of Bitey the Clown.
