After Eastern Michigan’s 58-56 win against Ball State Saturday, Feb. 24, the court at Worthen Arena looked like a Jihad/Sharpe family reunion. Numerous small children threw up basketballs toward the hoop as Basheer Jihad watched on, standing at 6-feet, 9-inches tall in his all-red Ball State men’s basketball uniform.

Inside jam-packed Savage Arena in Toledo, Ohio Saturday afternoon, the top two teams in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) squared off for the second time this season. In the match up the Ball State Cardinals (23-4, 12-2 MAC) struggled against the reigning MAC champions Toledo Rockets (21-4, 13-1 MAC), falling by a final score of 70-48.

Ball State men’s basketball head coach Michael Lewis said after the Cardinals’ 21-point loss to Miami (OH) Feb. 16, conversations within the program were focused on using that defeat for motivation. With just six games left on the slate heading into the Feb. 20th game against Northern Illinois and sitting at ninth place in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) standings, Lewis assured his squad to control what they can control as the season becomes do or die.
