BYTEing Question Responses: If you could dress up as any character for Halloween, who would you be?

Responses submitted by fans ________________________________________________________________________ Brad Gonzalez     I'm already dressing as Princess Peach (the girl dressing as Mario) but I would love to dress as Sly Cooper. ________________________________________________________________________ Nadia Baca   It would be really cool to dress up as a realistic zombie, such as the ones from The Walking Dead.

Panels discussing online harassment cancelled at SXSW due to “violent threats”

Two panels at the upcoming 2016 South by Southwest Festival have been canceled due to “numerous threats of violence”, according to the panelists.  One of the panels, called “Level Up: Overcoming Harassment in Games,” was set to discuss online harassment culture.  The other, called “SavePoint: A Discussion on the Gaming Community”, featured pro-Gamergate speakers. Anti-harassment activists Randi Lee Harper, Caroline Sinders, and Katherine Cross were to constitute the “Level Up” panel.  It became part of SXSW’s scheduled program thanks to the winning votes on the festival’s interactive voting service, “Panelpicker,” something that Gamergate supporters weren’t happy about. Gamergate began in August 2014 after game developer Zoë Quinn garnered what some thought was “undue attention” for a game.  The backlash grew into harassment via distributing private information such as home addresses, threats of rape and extreme violence, and threats of mass shootings in response to Quinn’s outspokenness.  Fellow game developer Brianna Wu and cultural critic Anita Sarkeesian were also targeted, as was actress and gamer Felicia Day. On Monday, Harper was informed that the panel had been canceled.  The cancelation came after SXSW received “numerous threats of violence” to the panel.  It was a surprise to Harper, who had been working with SXSW on security for the panelists, due to the regularity of online harassment activists receiving threats. Cross told Jezebel that she is “bitterly disappointed” about the panel’s cancelation.  She added that the panel “was not about Gamergate.  It was about the wider problem of online harassment.” The pro-Gamergate panel “SavePoint”, whose panelists included pro-Gamergate game developers Nick Robalik and Perry Jones, adult film star Mercedes Carrera, and NBC producer Lynn Walsh, was also canceled. ----- Source: Jezebel Image: SXSW
