Delaware County had two high school softball teams compete for a Regional Championship May 31 and each took home their respective trophies. Find out how below:

Yorktown High School Softball Regional Championship

May 31, Yorktown High School Softball (25-3) defeated Bellmont High School (13-11) 5-2 to win their first Regional Championship since 2019, and their fifth in program history. This game took place in Yorktown, Indiana in front of the largest crowd the Tigers (Yorktown) had seen all season.

Yorktown struck first, as senior first baseman and University of Saint Francis commit Macie Dowd hit a three run home run in the bottom of the third inning to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, with the score at 4-0 in Yorktown’s favor (the fourth run courtesy of junior third baseman Jenna Sylvester), sophomore designated hitter/pitcher Caitlin LaFerney hit a solo home run off the scoreboard to give Yorktown a 5-0 lead.

In the sixth inning, LaFerney came into the game in relief of Yorktown senior pitcher and Purdue-Fort Wayne commit Alanah Jones (2-4 at the plate), who pitched the first five innings of the contest, allowing three hits, no runs, no walks and striking out 11 Braves. LaFerney and Yorktown gave up two runs in the top of the sixth, but LaFerney settled in and allowed no runs in the seventh, striking out the final batter of the game to secure the Tigers Regional Championship victory as she was mobbed by her teammates.

LaFerney finished with two innings pitched, four hits, two runs and no walks allowed with two strikeouts.

Yorktown advances to Semi-State Semifinals at Twin Lakes, where they are scheduled to face South Bend St. Joseph’s High School (25-3) at 1 p.m. June 4, with the winner advancing to the Semi-State Championship at 7 p.m. June 4.

Cowan High School Regional Championship

With their 8-3 victory over Cambridge City Lincoln High School (9-14) May 31, Cowan High School (16-8) won their second Regional Championship in a row, and their fourth in program history.

The score of this game may seem deceiving, as the Blackhawks (Cowan) and Golden Eagles were tied at 3-3 as the game went into extra innings, before Cowan scored five runs in the top of the eighth and allowed no runs in the bottom of the inning, as the final batter popped out to junior first baseman Miranda Bowling to claim victory.

Cowan junior McKenna Minton had three RBI, the most of any Blackhawk as she hit 2-5. Bowling hit 2-4 with two doubles and one RBI and junior pitcher Tatum Rickert hit 3-4 with one RBI as well.

On the mound, Rickert pitched all eight innings, allowing eight hits, three runs, four walks and striking out 10 Golden Eagles.

The Blackhawks advance to the Semi-State Semifinals at Frankfort, where they will face the winner of Morgan Township High School (15-6) V. South Central High School (20-6) June 4 at 1 p.m. The winner will advance to the Semi-State Championship June 4 at 7 p.m. at Frankfort.
