May 30 Delaware County Sports Roundup: Two Delaware County Baseball programs win Sectional Championships

Memorial Day was host to six Delaware County Baseball games, with five different high schools in action. A rundown of each event is below:

Cowan and Wes-Del Baseball Sectional Semifinal/Championship 

Two Delaware County High School Baseball teams squared off in the Sectional Championship of Sectional 55 (1A) at Memorial Field (Anderson Prep Academy) in Anderson, Indiana May 30. Cowan High School (16-9) defeated Wes-Del High School (16-9) 5-3 to claim their second straight Sectional Championship. 

The Blackhawks (Cowan) did not enter stats for this contest, however, for the Warriors, senior Alex Light hit a home run on the first pitch of the game to give Wes-Del an early 1-0 lead. Cowan put up three runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth, while the Warriors answered back with two of their own in the fourth, to put the game at 5-3 with the Blackhawks in the lead. 

From there, neither team scored for the rest of the game, as Cowan earned a Sectional Championship, their eighth in program history. At the end of the game, the only Warrior with more than one hit was junior Travis Bunch (2-3, one RBI). 

Cowan advances to Regionals, attempting to win their second straight and fifth in program history, and are scheduled to face Rossville High School (17-12) June 4 at 11 a.m. at Lafayette Central Catholic High School in a Regional Semifinal contest. Should the Blackhawks win, they will face the winner of Union City High School (18-6) V. Lafayette Central Catholic High School (23-6) in the Regional Championship June 4 at 7:30 p.m. at Lafayette Central Catholic High School. 

Each program won a semifinal contest earlier in the day on May 30, the first of which was the Warriors’ defeat over Southern Wells High School (7-15) 12-5. Wes-Del scored all 12 of their runs in the fourth inning and in total, Indiana Wesleyan University commit senior Zack Todd went 4-4 with three RBI and two triples. 

Bunch (four RBI), senior Will Kelly (one RBI),  junior Dawson Bookout (one RBI) and senior Jace Wilson each had two hits for Wes-Del as well. 

In their semifinal matchup, Cowan defeated Tri-Central High School (2-21) 25-1 in five innings. The Blackhawks scored 18 runs in the fourth inning after previously scoring seven runs in the first three innings. 

Senior Owen Brand hit 4-4 with two home runs and three RBI, senior Chase Smith went 3-4 with four RBI, sophomore Jackson Clifford went 2-3 with two RBI and senior Austin Jones hit 2-3 with three RBI. On the mound, junior Landen Hiatt pitched four of the five innings played, allowing three hits, one run, two walks and striking out eight batters. 

Wapahani Baseball Sectional Championship 

No. 3 in 2A (coaches poll) Wapahani High School (22-4) won their third straight Sectional Championship (2019, no season in 2020, 2021, 2022) after defeating Frankton High School (16-10-1) 15-10 May 30. The Raiders (Wapahani) previously defeated Lapel (14-8-1) and Monroe Central (20-9) to advance to the Sectional Championship. 

In this contest, senior Luke Willmann (1-3, four RBI) hit a home run for the fifth game in a row. Junior Purdue Northwest commit Gavin Lash (two RBI), junior Daxton Dudley (two RBI, double), sophomore Landon Weller (one RBI, double) and sophomore Isaac Andrews each collected two hits, while junior Paul Fisher had three (including a double) along with four RBI.

With this win, Wapahani advances to Regionals, where they are scheduled to take on Eastern High School (23-7) in a Regional Semifinal matchup June 4 at 11 a.m. at Carroll High School (Flora). Should the Raiders win, they will face the winner of Delphi Community High School (21-8) V. Carroll High School (Flora) (25-1) for a chance at their eighth Regional Championship in program history June 4 at 8 p.m. at Carroll High School (Flora). 

Muncie Central Baseball Sectional Semifinal 

In a semifinal contest in Sectional 9 (4A), Muncie Central High School (6-19) was defeated by the eventual Sectional Champions, Anderson High School (17-12) 4-2 May 30 at Mt. Vernon High School.

The Bearcats jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but allowed four runs in the third and fourth inning and failed to score in innings three-seven. Junior Logan Grady hit 2-3 with a double. 

In relief for Muncie Central, freshman Logan Campbell pitched two innings, allowing one hit, no runs, one walk and collecting three strikeouts. 

Delta Baseball Sectional Semifinal

In a Sectional 24 (3A) matchup, Delta High School (9-17) was defeated by Guerin Catholic High School (20-10) 14-4 in five innings May 30 at Yorktown High School. Delta led 2-1 after two innings, but the game swung Guerin Catholic’s way in the third, as the Golden Eagles took a 6-2 lead and didn’t give up that lead. 

Stats were not entered for this contest. Guerin Catholic ultimately lost in the Sectional Championship to New Castle High School (16-5-1) 3-2 May 30.
