Senior nursing major Kate Mahnensmith participated in the third Bed Race of her college career Oct. 22. Mahnensmith, a member of Ball State’s all-girl cheerleading squad, won the independent female category with her team.
“It’s all in the beds, I swear,” Mahnensmith said. “On some of them, the wheels will start shivering.”
Of her three years worth of Bed Races, Mahnensmith said her team has won two awards in the past two years, and in 2019, she said they competed with a “bad bed.”
Each year, the Ball State cheerleading squad organizes an all-female team and a co-ed team to compete in the Bed Races. For the Spring 2021 Homecoming, teams competed at the University Track at Briner Sports Complex rather than West Riverside Avenue to allow for more social distancing.
“[The track] was super different — the feeling of the track,” Mahnensmith said. “It was super nice to be back on Riverside today.”

A total of 18 teams raced next to each other in pairs at noon Oct. 22, with student organizations, faculty and staff, fraternities and sororities organizing their own teams.
The Christian Campus House won the independent male and best time categories with the fastest race time of 8.93 seconds. Joshua Trembly, sophomore criminal justice major, said the church leadership council came up with the idea to put a Bed Race team together this fall.
Trembly said he wasn’t able to watch last spring’s Bed Races, but his team discussed strategies leading up to the event.
“We just decided it was something we wanted to do just to get our name out there,” Trembly said, “and had some fun doing it.”
