Ball State’s Students Government Association (SGA) swore in the executive slate members of the Bold slate Wednesday at their weekly virtual senate meeting via the WebEx online video conference platform.

Past inaugurations have taken place in Cardinal Hall B at the L.A. Pittenger Student Center, but in compliance with the university’s response to the COVID-19 outbreak, SGA has been conducting meetings online since March 18.

“We will try to keep this ceremony as traditional as possible,” Elevate’s Vice President Cameron DeBlasio said.

The ceremony was recorded by SGA adviser Jim Hague and will be posted to SGA’s social media.

Though DeBlasio said new senators are usually sworn in with the incoming executive slate, SGA only swore in Bold slate members and President Pro Tempore Dylan Lewandowski online and plan to welcome new senators in the fall 2020 semester.

Elevate slate members, led by former President Aiden Medellin, said goodbye to senators watching the ceremony and thanked their fellow slate members.

“Thank you everyone for tuning in today. It speaks volumes that there is an audience here, creating certainty in such uncertain times,” Medellin said. “To my slate, I owe you literally everything. Every part of our vision was due to each of you, not one single person.”

DeBlasio also thanked Medellin for asking him to be Elevate’s vice president, saying Medellin and him have developed a friendship through serving together on the slate.

“I don’t think I said this to you enough, my friend, but I could not be more grateful about the opportunity you gave me to be your number two,” DeBlasio said.

Before directing Bold’s President Connor Sanburn to swear an oath, Medellin gave him some advice.

“Don’t just go into this job with the idea that it is just SGA,” Medellin told Sanburn. “This organization allows you to change the lives of real people and to promote new bold ideas.”

Before the meeting ended, Sanburn and Bold’s Vice President Jordyn Blythe shared their goals for the fall 2020 semester with senators.

“I have been itching to see you all in person,” Sanburn said. “So this fall, we are going to hit the ground running and leave this campus better than we found it.”

Bold won the runoff election in February, defeating the Aureum slate in the first round of voting and Alliance in the resulting runoff. Blythe thanked Elevate for helping Bold slate members transition easily into leadership positions.

“Thank you most importantly to the student body, to all of you, for giving us the opportunity to serve as your next executive slate,” Blythe said. “I’m beyond excited to work with all of you and this team to bring positive change to this university.”
