Senior pitcher Nicole Steinbach was credited with the complete-game loss after allowing just one unearned run and four hits in seven innings. She also struck out six batters.

The only run of the game was scored in the first when Central Michigan’s leadoff hitter, sophomore center-fielder Sara Hansen, reached base on a throwing error by senior shortstop Emily Dabkowski. Hansen advanced on a ground out and a wild pitch before scoring on an RBI groundout by senior shortstop CarolAnn Sexauer.

Ball State senior second baseman Selena Reyna singled with one out in the fifth inning. Junior left-fielder India Steward was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second. A strikeout by junior center-fielder Rachel Houck and a fly-out to left field by senior first baseman Sammi Cowger, however, stranded the runners.

Central Michigan junior pitcher Rachael Knapp limited the Cardinals to just three hits. The hits came from Dabkowski, Reyna and freshman right-fielder Aeshia Miles.

The defense saw multiple changes from past games. Junior Amanda Arnett moved across the diamond from her usual spot at first base to third, pushing normal third baseman Miles to right field. Cowger took over at first along with Reyna filling in in at second.

The series will continue with a doubleheader on April 23 with games at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
