The Muncie Animal Rescue Fund is holding a volunteer orientation from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday for all Ball State students who are interested in volunteering for the shelter.
Students who attend the orientation must be at least 18 years old and will be given proper instruction on what to do during their volunteer time.
"We will be showing the students around the facility, as well as telling them the do's and don'ts of working here," Phil Peckinpaugh, executive director of ARF, said.
Peckinpaugh said the volunteer program gives students a chance to spend time with animals while living at a university, which doesn't allow pets.
"Many students have had to leave their pets at home, and they end up missing them because they can't take them to college with them," Peckinpaugh said. "The volunteer program lets them fill that void by letting them interact with our animals."
ARF has attracted a lot of Ball State students over the past years because of the friendly atmosphere that surrounds the volunteers and workers there, Peckinpaugh said.
"When students volunteer here, they get really good preparation for working at an animal shelter, as well as a sense of belonging that comes from our staff and animals," he said.
Students do not need any background in working at an animal shelter before and are welcome to bring friends along.
"We're all about creating a family-like atmosphere because we know the students, workers and animals benefit the most from it," Peckinpaugh. "We really want the students have fun here and enjoy volunteering their time."
