MEN'S GOLF: Cardinal ties for first in Colorado Springs

Carpenter shoots 209 for first place, BSU finishes fifth

Ball State men's golf team continues to improve on its fall season with a fifth-place finish at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The Cardinals finished fifth behind co-champions Colorado and UNLV, third-place finisher Colorado State, and North Carolina State.

The top player for Ball State, senior T.J. Carpenter, was tied for first with Kevin Penner from UNLV with a 209.

Sophomore Tyler Merkel finished tied for 21st with a 216; junior Alex Stinson tied for 43rd with a 221; junior Joe Gasser tied for 51st with a score of 223; and rounding out the lineup, junior Tony Lazzara tied for 62nd with a 225.

Coach Mike Fleck was satisfied with his team's performance in the tournament.

"I'm proud of our guys' effort and very happy for T.J.," Fleck said. "He did a great job and his game was very solid this weekend."

This is the second consecutive tournament that a golfer from Ball State has finished tied for first. Last week, sophomore Tyler Merkel tied for first in the Northern Intercollegiate. The team finished tied for fourth.

The team will try to keep the momentum as it travels to Burlington, Iowa for the Golfweek Conference Challenge on Saturday.
