Rokita says indicted official should step aside

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The man who preceded Indiana's top elections official in office says he should step aside after being indicted on voter fraud and other charges.

Republican U.S. Rep. Todd Rokita said in a statement Thursday that fellow Republican Charlie White should step down as secretary of state until the seven felony counts against him are resolved.

Rokita says White "cannot credibly or adequately do his duties while contesting criminal charges."

White faces charges of voter fraud, perjury, theft and financial fraud, all stemming from claims he lied about his address on various documents.

The Indiana Recount Commission on which Rokita served dismissed a Democratic challenge to White's victory in the Nov. 2 election based on similar grounds.
