SGA slates debate on the radio

Student Government Association presidential and vice presidential candidates participated in a much more informal second debate on the air with WCRD's David Boulton.

Boulton holds a one hour long show called "Radio Sweetheart" each Tuesday at 9 p.m. featuring a prominent Ball State figure. This week, he interviewed Campus Voice presidential and vice presidential candidates Kevin Thurman and Beau Browning and Catalyst presidential and vice presidential candidates Kayla Pickersgill and Chris Buck.

The show featured each of the candidate's favorite band with a song by them chosen by Boulton. In between songs, Boulton asked the candidates various questions.

Boulton said he thinks students can hear a new side of their SGA executive board candidates through his relaxed radio show.

"It is good to try to get these guys out of their normal politician shells," he said. "[The students] want to hear the candidates they are voting for are just normal people and not doing this because they want something on their resume."

Boulton began by questions he picked himself. He tried to get the slates away from the responses he heard at the first debate, referring the responses as being "cookie cutter."

Towards the end of the show, Boulton asked the candidates questions that were being instant messaged to WCRD by listeners.

Pickersgill was asked if it should be mandated that future slates require a graduate student candidate so the voice of graduate students are heard. She said she does not believe the rule would be necessary.

"It doesn't matter if one of those persons is a graduate, one is a senior, one is a junior and one is a sophomore," she said. "If three juniors and a sophomore felt like they could do the best job for Ball State, then that would be great."

Thurman was asked about a possible check and balance system for parking services. He made it clear he felt the current parking services system is fair.

"I think it is just a miscommunication between whether these students, faculty or visitors about different rules that Ball State Parking Services has and there is an appeals process that is in place and most people take advantage of," he said. "If they don't think they are given the right treatment, I encourage them by all means to go through that and their voice will be heard."

Other questions tested their knowledge about the student judicial system and the SGA quorum rule.

For those students who missed the show live, the show can be found at wcrd.net.

Students will have two more opportunities to hear the SGA slates before voting begins on Monday.

The slates will be addressing SGA senate at 3:15 p.m. today. The full slates will also be debating against the debate team in Arts and Journalism Building room 175 Thursday at 7 p.m.
