Rallies planned to support, oppose Dems boycott

INDIANAPOLIS — The boycott by Indiana House Democrats over contentious Republican-backed legislation is spurring rallies and protests on both sides.

Union workers planned to gather at the Statehouse for a fifth consecutive day Friday to protest legislation they consider an attack on the working class.

Tea party groups also planned to meet Friday and scheduled a noon rally at the Statehouse to urge minority Democrats to get back to work. They say Democrats should be at the Statehouse instead of staying at a hotel in Illinois, where they fled in an effort to derail bills supported by majority Republicans.

Republicans will try to convene the House again on Monday, but Democrats say they aren't sure if they'll be back.

Neither Republicans nor Democrats have budged since the stalemate began Tuesday.
