Elections for SGA to be held today

Voting for the Student Government Association executive slates Campus Voice and Catalyst open today.

The slates campaigning for SGA went head-to-head Thursday night, answering tough questions presented by the Ball State debate team.

Slates were asked about a number of topics, all pertaining to the actions they said they would take if they were elected. The final question asked slates how they are going to carry out ideas previous slates have had and failed.

"Every slate has concrete ideas on their platform that they want to do. What they haven't done is attempt to get the students involved in the way that we are," Beau Browning, Campus Voice vice presidential candidate, said. "Our big thing is to, [as] it says in the title, be the voice of the campus."

Kayla Pickersgill, Catalyst presidential candidate, said her slate's experience would help them if they're elected.

"All of us have had experience in SGA," she said. "We've seen failures, and we've seen successes throughout it ... One of the most important things about our platform is that all of these things are achievable."

Each slate was drilled with questions about their platform points and planned actions by debate team members Joel Franz, Farangisi Nozimzoda, J. Bryant and Alysha Hoffa.

"Both slates are definitely very well prepared, and they know their stuff, so that was very reassuring," Bryant said.

Approximately 50 students gathered in the Arts and Journalism Building to hear their prospective candidates' viewpoints on campus issues.

Devin Hillsdon-Smith, SGA elections chair, said he wasn't as impressed by the slates' responses as Bryant was.

"I think that, for some reason, a lot of the responses here have been full of fluff," he said. "I hope it doesn't affect voting turnout. Our events are over now. It is up to the student body now."

For the first time this year, the election board will have stands set up around campus to help students with the voting process.

Election board members will be set up from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and 11 a.m. until voting closes on Tuesday in the Atrium, the Tally and Bracken Library.
