Looking back on 2010 films, preview of spring releases

I thought 2010 was generally a lackluster year for movies until I saw "The Fighter." With its inspirational story, powerful performances and equally evocative soundtrack, I was transported and enthralled.

The film is an underdog boxing story in the vein of "Rocky." However, the boxing is not the center of the story, but rather the catalyst for an engrossing family drama. Mark Wahlberg portrays real-life boxer Micky Ward; Christian Bale plays his drug-addled trainer and half-brother, Dicky Eklund; and Melissa Leo is the matriarch overseeing their careers.

"The Fighter" is one of the most complex, emotional films I have ever seen about the dynamics of a family. Director David O. Russell managed to make the movie both familiar and fresh by imbuing the story with modern visual flair and the heart of old Hollywood.

"The Fighter" restored my faith in movies so completely that I looked back upon the year's selection of films and realized that it was not so disappointing after all. There was merely an abundance of smaller stories like that of "The Fighter."

Take, for instance, the fact that the biggest film of the year was a quietly devastating portrait of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.
