Ball State Museum of Art looks for docents

Have you ever gone to a museum and felt a little lost? That's when art museum docents come in handy.

Docents in a museum provide tours and answer questions about pieces contained within the museum. The Ball State Museum of Art is now looking for someone to fill that position.

Even though the BSUMA is busy preparing for the upcoming exhibit, "Shout Freedom! Collections from the Columbus Museum of Art," it is still looking for students to apply by Friday.

Tania Said, curator of education at the BSUMA, worked as a docent while attending Ball State as an undergraduate student and has been with the museum for five years in her current position.

"Students in all areas of study are welcome to be docents," she said. "Students outside of the art majors often bring a new and fresh perspective."

Sophomore history major Nicole Griffetts said she plans on applying to be a docent and looks forward to the experience she will gain in art history.

Cary Patterson, junior theater major and returning docent, said her job allows her to be in a safe environment for learning to speak in front of a group. Other benefits include experience in community outreach, organizational psychology and opportunities to earn credit.
