ABSO now provides comic relief twice a week

Students will soon be able to see a Ball State improvisational comedy group perform twice per week for $1 or less.

Starting Friday, ABSO will perform every Friday night at Motini's in the Village, which is located above the MT Cup. Performances will be open to those 18 years and older with a $1 admission.

ABSO will also perform on campus every Tuesday beginning Jan. 18. While the final located has yet to be finalized, Derek Cox, ABSO president, said it will more than likely be in a room like the Art and Journalism Building Room 175 or Teachers College Room 101.

For the Tuesday night shows, rather than being charged $1 for each person, it will be a $1 charge to each group. Cox said depending on the size of the group, students can attend for practically free.

"If you come by yourself, it will be $1 for admission," Cox said. "But if you bring 12 people with you, it will be saving all of you a lot because it will only be $1 for all of you."

Twelve students make up the improv comedy group ABSO. This past semester, the troupe performed whenever it could. Cox said with a permanent two-nights-per-week schedule, ABSO hopes to reach even more students.

ABSO was created in 1991 for students interested in improvisational humor under the name of Absolunacy. ABSO is open to performing at all sorts of events, including charity events.

Cox said ABSO not only benefits students comically, but those participating learn skills for life after college.

"A good reason for improv troupes any area you are at in life, the skills that you learn during improv are going to help you," Cox said. "Anywhere you go, improv skills will help you because being on your toes and being able to react immediately will help you."

ABSO typically performs short-form improv skits, such as the ones seen on the television show "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" This semester, ABSO will also perform long-form improv comedy since they have two opportunities per week to perform.

ABSO tries to involve the audience as much as possible during performances through taking audience suggestions for each scene and sometimes even pulling them up on stage to participate.

"It is really fun and it always different, so it isn't like you are going to see the same thing every week," said Jimmy Guerrero, ABSO member and junior physics major.
