Accident near Ball State campus

A car accident north of campus sent two people to Ball Memorial Hospital on Thursday.

Jack Bickel, 81, was exiting the commuter lot north of Worthen Arena when his Chrysler Concord collided with Monty Ervin's Ford Ranger shortly before 4 p.m., Muncie Police Department patrolman James Lenox said.

Bickel was crossing Bethel Avenue to Glenwood Avenue when he didn't see Ervin, 26, heading east on Bethel, Lenox said. Ervin hit Bickel's driver side, crumpling the door and trapping Bickel inside.

Bickel complained of pain in his left shoulder and Ervin complained of chest pain, Lenox said.

"[Ervin's chest pain] was likely from the seatbelt and air bag," Lenox said. "Both were wearing their seatbelts and both air bags deployed."

Drivers should always be aware of their surroundings, Lenox said.

"Everyone needs to be careful when crossing intersections. Always remember to look to the right and the left," he said.
