Fashion Promotions students transform Cardinal Hall to urban jungle for show

Students in Fashion Promotions class will present their end of year fashion show at 3 p.m. today at Cardinal Hall in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center.

The theme of the show is Urban Instinct: Where the Wild Things Walk. Students in the class are responsible for coming up with the theme, and senior Kipp Elliott said the trendy jungle theme works well with for the organization they're raising money for, Cardinal Greenway.

Senior Bekah Hilleson said the event is like New York Fashion Week, but on a smaller scale.

"When we were planning it, we said, 'We want this to be like Bryant Park,'" she said.

Elliott said Cardinal Hall will be transformed into a trendy jungle scene with a cityscape background, graffiti, urban prints and skid marks on the runway.

"I've been a model in three shows," he said. "I've haven't seen anything like that. Once one thing clicked and hit, we just had so many ideas."

Organizing a fashion show can be expensive, and students get a stipend for creating outfits and organizing the event. Elliott said the fashion show is usually off campus, and the cost of the venue can be as much as $15,000. Since it's held at Cardinal Hall this year, he said it costs about $3,000 to put on the show.

Tickets were pre-sold at the Applied Technology Building and the Atrium this week for $7. Tickets will cost $10 at the door.

Hilleson said there was hardly any outsourcing for the show. The group will utilize Ball State student DJs, photographers and printing services.

She said student leaders for the show have met each week outside of class, and she doesn't even know how many hours she's put into the show. As this year's apparel merchandise coordinator, she said she's looking forward to seeing it all come together on Sunday.

There are about 25 students in the Fashion Promotion class and about 45 models, which were selected after a model callout in February. Hilleson will contribute an outfit that's sporty and very urban-looking. She said it's trendy and funky and made with all knit solid fabric and angular details.

There are essentially three parts to the show: a runway show with garments and fashion apparel merchandise, a show for accessory merchandise with the Ball State logo and a reception with light refreshments and displays with live models.

Ball State University President Jo Ann Gora will be at the show. Elliott said she will be announcing the winner of the men's necktie and women's scarf contest open to Ball State Fashion and Graphic Arts Students. Senior Tonya Peercy said 160 students entered the contest earlier this year. The winning accessories will be given as gifts from the university to international visitors.

"We've all worked so well together, and to see it all come together, I can't wait to present it to friends and family," Peercy said.
