The greek community cheered for their favorite performance at last night's Mr. Phi-Nominal, but only one talent could take the crown.
Senior advertising major Noel Kunz blew away the Pruis Hall crowd with his yo-yo skills while helping to raise money in one of Alpha Phi's largest fundraising events. The money raised benefits the Alpha Phi Foundation, an organization created to increase awareness about women's cardiac care. With February being Alpha Phi's Cardiac Care Month, the event is all about the cause.
Paul Desmond, president of the Interfraternity Council, said the event was a great example of the greek community coming together.
"Our greek life isn't very big at Ball State, but raising $7,000 last year was a big accomplishment," Desmond said. "The event is about women supporting women."
Alpha Phi members Anna Chatfield and Shelby Scocozza handed out door prizes and gift cards from Texas Roadhouse, Noodles & Co., Pita Pit and Amazing Joe's at the event.
Hundreds of students came to show their support and talents ranged from vocals, piano, comedy and the winning yo-yo talent.
Guitar performer Joe Young said he loves playing guitar and was thrilled to help the foundation.
"Women's cardiac care is a great cause, I myself fight for curing cancer. Fighting for a cause is always important," he said.
There also were special performances by singers Jorden Applegate and Megan Downey. Many of the performers included shout outs to Alpha Phi members, creating an explosion of cheers in the crowded hall.
Senior architecture major Natasha Sieracki said the event offered more than the traditional singing and dancing talents.
"It's cool because all of the acts are different," she said. "Some people take it seriously while others just have fun with it."
This year's winner said his routine took three months to perfect and all the dedication was worth it.
"I dedicated the show to my late grandfather and I wanted this win to happen," Kunz said. "I have been running this routine through my head. I like to incorporate popular music and dance. Without all the hard work and preparation, it would have been really hard to do."
