WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Career night from Maggert leads Ball State past Duquesne

Cards shoot over 50 percent in road victory to even record at 5-5

The Ball State University women's basketball team defeated host Duquesne 71-62 on Saturday behind a career night from Emily Maggert.

The junior forward scored a career-high 25 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season, leading the Cardinals (5-5) to a 50.9 percent shooting performance against the Dukes (8-4).

Other than Maggert, senior guard Audrey McDonald (11 points) and junior guard Ty'Ronda Benning (10) ended the day in double digits.

A 3-point play from Maggert put the Cardinals up 23-21 at the 6:07 mark of the first half, and Ball State wouldn't give up the lead the rest of the way.

Though Duquesne did come within two points at 55-53 with 6:12 to play in the game — off the heels of an 11-0 run by the Dukes — Ball State slowly built back its lead, beginning with three McDonald free throws thereafter, and a free throw battle eventually pushed the game out of reach.

The Cardinals also stood strong on defense, limiting the Dukes to a .303 shooting percentage for the game, including a 3-for-20 (.150) effort beyond the 3-point arc.

Forward Samantha Pollino led Duquesne with 22 points and 12 rebounds, while guard Keri Pryor had 13 points and Kelly Britcher had 12 points.

Ball State continues its road swing with a matchup against in-state rival Evansville on Tuesday.
