WOMEN'S GOLF: Cardinals take motivation from last week into invitational

The Ball State University women's golf team will tee off in Rio Verde, Ariz., today in 20-team field.

Northern Arizona University plays host to six Mid-American Conference teams along with three Big Ten teams. The Cardinals played in this same tournament almost exactly a year ago, finishing in a tie for ninth out of 18 teams.

Unlike last year, the Cardinals have already played in a tournament entering this one.

With many of the players having played at this tournament a year ago, the course will not be completely unfamiliar to the Ball State golfers. But 16 of the other 17 teams in the field also competed last year, so there will be a familiarity with the course for most of the teams competing.

Even with what should be a highly competitive field, the Cardinals look to use the 33rd place they took at the Kiawah Intercollegiate as motivation for today's tournament, sophomore Rachael Pruett said.

"Our finish last week does give us motivation, but in a positive way," she said. "We may not have finished in the top half like we had hoped, but we did get to play our first competitive rounds of the spring and learned what we needed to work on this past week in practice."

Pruett was the top scorer at 22-up for the Kiawah Intercollegiate and shot a career-best 73 at the tournament. She and her teammates will look to get a lot more scores like that 73 in a much warmer and more golfer-friendly environment when they arrive in Rio Verde.

The Cardinals will tee off at 1 p.m. today and play through Sunday when the tournament culminates. This tournament, like the last, will have live scoring at GolfStat.com for those who wish to keep updated.

The Cardinals will also participate in a tournament on the second weekend of Spring Break in Citrus Springs, Fla.

Eastern Kentucky University is the host of the two-day tournament. This is the first year the Cardinals will participate in the tournament.

The Eastern Kentucky El Diablo Spring Invitational will start Thursday and end March 13. Scoring for the tournament will also be available on GolfStat.com
