FOOTBALL: Stan Parrish named Ball State's head football coach

Stan Parrish was officially announced as the next head coach of Ball State University's football team Thursday after signing a four-year contract worth a guaranteed $1.4 million.

Parrish, who served as the Cardinals' offensive coordinator this season, said his acceptance of the position came with a strong endorsement from former head coach Brady Hoke. He said he will bring continuity to the team because Hoke gave him a lot of say in the program's operations as an assistance coach.

Parrish was given the option to replace Hoke as the Cardinals' head coach or join Hoke's new coaching staff as the offensive coordinator at San Diego State University. Parrish said his decision came down to what was best for Ball State's players.

"They broke all the ties with me," Parrish said. "It just seemed very difficult to think that both Brady and I would leave."

Parrish's base salary will pay $350,000 per year, with additional income built in for achievement incentives. His annual base salary is $40,000 less than the offer extended to Hoke.

Athletics director Tom Collins said the offer was presented Wednesday and signed Thursday.

"Stan has worked side by side with coach Hoke in helping build the program," Collins said. "Stan's uniquely qualified, having been here and having been a previous head coach. When I asked Stan if he was ready for the challenge, he responded positively and very enthusiastically."

Parrish will assume control of the program immediately and be on the sidelines during the GMAC Bowl against the University of Tulsa on Jan. 6, 2009.
