FOOTBALL: Signs show Hoke out as Ball State's coach

An e-mail posted on overthepylon.blogspot.com from Ball State University President Jo Ann Gora concludes Brady Hoke is no longer the Cardinals' head football coach.

"We worked very hard in our efforts to retain Coach Hoke," Gora wrote in the e-mail. "Recognizing his achievements this season, the university offered him a new deal that would have made Brady Ball State's highest paid employee. We willing discussed and resolved issues he raised. Upon learning of his decision, I asked Brady directly if there was any more we could have done to keep him, and he said, simply, 'no.'"

Gora also wrote in her e-mail that Hoke told her San Diego State University offered a five-year contract worth a guaranteed $3.5 million.

A picture of Hoke has also been removed from the front page of the university's athletics Web site, ballstatesports.com.

Hoke is still listed as the Cardinals' head coach on the Web site's football page.

Gora's e-mail also attempted to rally support from Ball State fans as the university moves from Hoke and begins searching for a new head coach.

"We are fortunate to have passionate fans and supporters of our athletic programs," Gora wrote. "I understand the sadness and even anger many feel about losing a valued member of the Ball State family. I hope you'll join me as we move forward and support our student athletes, seek a successful successor, and wish Brady the very best as he and his family transition to San Diego."

Hoke's agent, Trace Armstrong, said Sunday night he expected an announcement to be made by Monday afternoon.

However, San Diego State media contact Mike May, who spoke on behalf of athletics director Jeff Schemmel, neither confirmed or denied reports that Hoke will be the Aztecs' next head coach. He said no announcement will be made, regarding any candidate, until the university hosts an introductory press conference. No press conference had been scheduled as of 4 p.m. Monday.

"Ideally we plan a press conference the day before," May said. "Sometimes it's been the same day. It all depends, but you obviously want as much time as possible."

An e-mail to Gora has been unreturned as of 5 p.m. Monday. A message left on athletics director Tom Collins' cell phone was also unreturned as of 5 p.m.
