Ball State University will issue a hiring freeze for vacant and new positions, according to President's Perspective, an e-mail newsletter sent out by President Jo Ann Gora.
Exceptions to this policy will be limited and require approval in consultation with the president's cabinet, the e-mail said.
The hiring freeze will be effective today as a result of state budget costs.
According to the e-mail, the announcement comes a week after Gora told the University Senate that Ball State had a "fairly positive financial outlook".
Gov. Mitch Daniels said last week he plans "some marginal reductions" in higher education spending, but has not yet announced specifics.
In the same address, the governor ordered state agencies to cut spending by three percent, in addition to the seven percent cut Daniels issued earlier this year.
Ball State currently has 55 faculty openings, including the Deans of the Miller College of Business and Teachers College, according to the University Human Resource Services website.
