Cards to participate in Think Pink Initiative

For the first time this school year, the Ball State University athletics department wants fans not to wear the school's red and white colors.

The Cardinals announced Monday they will partake in the Think Pink Initiative to raise breast cancer awareness this weekend and are requesting fans wear pink at this weekend's home games.

Athletics director Tom Collins said the department decided to participate in the initiative because the coaches and players wanted to do the event. He also said raising awareness for breast cancer is a good cause that the entire athletics department cares about.

"Our student athletes are passionate about some things, and they want to help," Collins said. "We want to support our coaches and student-athletes."

The Think Pink weekend will include the soccer team's game against Ohio University at 4 p.m. Friday, the women's volleyball team's match against Ohio at 7 p.m. Saturday and the field hockey team's game against Missouri State University at noon Sunday.

During each game, the athletics department will collect donations for the Ball Memorial Hospital Breast Center. People who donate at least $25 will receive two general admission tickets for the Ball State football game against Northern Illinois University on Nov. 5 at Scheumann Stadium.

Collins said these types of events are good because they allow the teams to become more involved in the community. He also said Ball State does not have a set goal for the amount of money it wants to raise this weekend.

"The goal for this weekend is for all of our teams to be successful," Collins said.
