Some of the most controversial women in history will be entertaining people at Muncie Civic Theatre at 8 p.m. tonight. They're all part of "Madwomen's Late Nite Cabaret," a musical comedy written and directed by Julie Barber. Darrin Murrell, executive director of the Muncie Civic Theater, described the show as, "A parody and satire of history's view of women." The show takes place somewhere between heaven and hell with Ethel Murman playing master of ceremonies for the evening. The show moves between the various characters singing songs dealing with their unique situations. Some of the characters being used are Cleopatra, Eve and Marie Antoinette. Typhoid Mary is there to sing "Fever," and Lady Godiva will be crooning the audience with "The Bare Necessities," Barber said. "My favorite skit involves Joan of Arc singing 'Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,' Barber said."It's a feminist-bent show," said Murrell who, dressed as Lizzie Borden plays the piano for the comedy. Murrell explains, "We're turning the perception of women throughout history on it's head."The idea for the play was born out of a singular event. Barber was doing a show in Portland, Oregon, where all the men in her company did "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," and "it was kind of boring for all the women.""We started with songs that we already knew and matched them up to historical figures that made us laugh," said Barber. Eventually she had enough material for a show that lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes has over 12 characters.
Tonight will be the first-ever showing of the completed version of the comedy which is also the first play Barber has ever written. The comedy is on a secondary stage at the Muncie Civic Theater and is $10. It's playing Sept. 30 through Oct. 2 and Oct. 6 through Oct. 8. All shows are at 8 p.m. except Sunday, Oct. 2, which is at 2 p.m.
