CROSS COUNTRY: BSU looks to cut gap in next invitational

Junior runner seeks third consecutive win this weekend

The George Dales Invitation may not be a walk in the park for junior cross country standout Rose Lehe, but that won't stop her from enjoying the scenery.

The junior with two wins in two meets will go for a third this weekend at the George Dale Invitational.

"Its going to be a gorgeous day with great weather," she said.

In its third race of the season, the Lady Cardinals will run in the Invite along with Mid-American Conference opponents Western Michigan and Central Michigan.

Ball State University struggled to stay together at hilly Indiana University and will look to correct that in Michigan. "Our second race was better than the first," Coach Sue Parks said with the top five runners finishing from 1st to 37th.

The five had a time gap of about two minutes as Lehe finished in 18:02 and senior Nicole Hartford completed the course in 20:03.

"We had four competitive runners and our five was weak," Parks said of the meet at Indiana. "We're looking to get our top five runners all grouped together."

Kalamazoo on the other hand offers a relatively flat course which allows more sprints and quicker times. It's a triangular race (with three teams) all in the Mid American Conference. "We've got a chance to go out there and close the gap between the top five," Parks said.

Junior Rose Lehe hopes to continue her winning streak with a third-straight first-place finish.

"I just have to keep healthy, keep focus and keep working," Lehe said. "We look to continue improving the gap to under a minute, and see how our team runs."

Lehe has stepped up, with the loss of Jill Scully and Sarah Huddleson, into the first spot this season and has won both events.

"Shes looking really good ... definitely on a roll," Parks said.

Freshman Vanessa Gilbert could be the teams earliest surprise with fourth- and eighth-place finishes in the first two competitions.

"Vanessa is still trying to figure out how to race at this level," Parks said. "But shes doing a great job."
