FOOTBALL Hoke hires assistant coach

Hecklinski to coach wide receivers; high schoolers commit

Head football coach Brady Hoke announced Monday that he filled the gap in his coaching staff by hiring Jeff Hecklinski as wide receivers coach and promoting Ed Stults to offensive coordinator.

Stults, who will continue to coach offensive tackles and tight ends, replaces former coordinator Don Treadwell, who left in December to become offensive coordinator at Cincinnati. Hecklinski, who was originally hired by Hoke as quarterbacks coach before leaving for Arizona, replaces Treadwell as the receivers coach.

In addition, Hoke gave veteran assistant and quarterbacks coach Brent Baldwin the added title of passing game coordinator and named Aaron Wellman the director of strength and conditioning for football.

Hoke and his staff are expected to receive 23-25 letters of intent when the national signing period begins today. Two players from Muncie Central -- receiver Louis Johnson and tight end/defensive end Kenny Meeks -- have given verbal commitments to scholarship offers. Mishawaka Penn defensive end Casey Sponseller is the only other player from Indiana to receive and accept a scholarship offer.
