Dude looks like a lady

Hundreds attend Spectrum's 'Spring Queening' show Saturday night

The flamboyant performers of Saturday's drag show blew the audience away with an abundance of high heels and fake eye lashes. Performers donned everything from sequined tops and miniskirts to pink wigs and garter belts.

Hundreds of audience members with diverse sexual orientations attended "Spring Queening" Saturday at Ball Gym.

Audience members bared money, placing it in various areas of performers' bodies and costumes. Proceeds from the the show, sponsored by Spectrum, raised proceeds for A Better Way, Muncie's battered women's shelter. Spectrum is Ball State's gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and straight ally organization.

The show's co-host, who went by her stage name, Monica, has been participating in drag shows for five years.

"I love the reaction," Monica said.

Monica sparkled in a beaded gown passed on to her from her mother.

After an audience member told Monica he was straight, she proclaimed, "It's ok... everybody's not perfect!"

One of the show's other performers, who went by the stage name Rose?, said the term "drag" derived from Shakespearean times when men played the part of women in performances. Men dressed up as queens while their dresses "dragged" behind them. Rose? said she has been participating in drag shows for three years.

Performers were frequently found in the crowd climbing onto laps to serenade audience members. Justin Joy was the evening's drag king, performing to the music of Justin Timberlake.

Songs from the musical "Chicago" were also a favorite among performers and audience members.

Another drag queen, Magenta, performed Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful" while gay, lesbian and straight couples glided onto the stage to dance with their lovers.

Audience members were invited to come up on stage to compete for Arby's gift certificates by giving their best "gay and straight guy impressions."

Jennifer Dentino, freshman, gave the show an "A+."

"This was my first drag show and it was definitely a new experience," senior Myra Tyler said.

"I want to see big smiles," Rose? said. "I want everybody to have a great time."
