Classical Geek Theatre

First annual Mousey Awards announced

Well, geeks and geek-girls, another fantastic year has come and gone. I decided to begin a tradition in Classical Geek Theatre by awarding the first-ever end-of-the-year Mousey Awards.

A panel of highly informed, physically attractive judges toiled long and hard deciding who should win. Awards were granted on the basis of the panel of judges being right. Without further ado, the Mousey Awards!

Movie of the Year -- "Spiderman". Most people would expect the Mousey to go to "Two Towers" or "Attack of the Clones", but Sam Raimi's Marvel adaptation deserves it most. Not only was the film unusually faithful to the source material, but the love story made it palatable to non-comic fans.

Best Movie You Didn't See -- "Reign of Fire". In a summer that gave us "Minority Report", "Attack of the Clones" and "Spider-Man", few film goers journeyed out to see Christian Bale and Mathew Conaughey battle dragons on a post-apocalyptic earth. Their loss! This was the cheesy fantasy flick that surprised you with how good it was.

Album of the Year -- "Leaving Through the Window" (Something Corporate). I realize that, by awarding the Mousey Award to Something Corporate, I am confirming my friend's suspicions that I am in fact a 17 year-old girl. What can I say? I have a soft-spot for bands that rock out with a piano.

Best CD You Didn't Buy -- "The Lion and the Witch EP" (Weezer). You probably didn't get this live EP. There were only 10,000 of them made and none were sold in Indiana. (Louisville was as close as they got.) It has six tracks from a Weezer show in Japan. Highlight of the disc? Rivers Cuomo botches the words to "El Scorcho".

Videogame of the Year -- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (Playstation 2). I usually scoff at re-hashed versions of old videogames (Read: everything to ever be released on Game Cube), but Vice City truly is just about the most entertaining game to come out in years. Aside from the usual GTA hilarity, Vice City has motorcycles and R/C cars that go boom.

Best Videogame You Didn't Play -- Desert Crisis (PC). Desert Crisis is a Yet Another Half-Life Mod. It has the customability of Team Fortress, the objective-based game play of Counter-Strike and the insanity of Deathmatch Classic. You get to choose the armor, weapons and perks that best suit your FPS needs. Pure gaming bliss. Download the mod at http://www.desertcrisis.com

Comic Book of the Year -- Way of the Rat (CrossGen Comics). Chuck Dixon's oriental adventure serial is exceptional because it consistently tells a good story every month. The characters are well-developed and likable, and the art is crisp and clean. All that without a super-hero! Honorable mention goes to Grant Morrison's "New X-Men" and Jeph Loeb's "Batman".

Best Columnist to Ever Live -- The panel of highly informed, physically attractive judges really had a hard time deciding this one. In the end, they had no choice to award the Mousey Award for Best Columnist to Ever Live to Ben "Mouse" McShane. His good looks, charming wit, exceptional taste in everything and really good looks set him above all other human beings.

Maybe next year mankind will be able to catch up. Maybe.
