BSU splits weekend matches

In its first weekend of Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association action, the men's volleyball team went 1-1, falling to the team favored to finish second to Ball State in the MIVA.

After the No. 6 Cardinals (6-2, 1-1) overpowered Clarke 3-0 on Friday, Lewis beat the Cardinals in straight sets 30-23, 30-28, 30-25, at Worthen Arena Saturday. The win put No. 11 Lewis in first place of the MIVA at 2-0, with the Cardinals one game behind.

Senior outside attacker Kyle Weindel led Ball State with 15 kills in the match. Senior outside attacker Josh Zuidema had 13 kills and junior outside attacker Jary Delgado added nine.

Reigning MIVA player of the week Keith Schunzel had 40 assists in the match, but the Cardinals couldn't overcome service errors and no aces. The teams combined for no aces and 27 service errors.

Set one of the match went back and forth. Ball State was up 9-4 before Lewis went on an 11-4 run and took a 15-13 lead. After the Cardinals tied the set at 19, Lewis won with another 11-4 run.

The second set was the closest of the three. The largest lead Lewis held was five points, winning by two. Weindel had seven kills in the set.

Lewis' 2002 MIVA Player of the Year Fabiano Barreto had seven kills in the third and deciding set to help put away the Cardinals.

Heading into the match, head coach Joel Walton said Lewis's top two players, Barreto and Gustavo Meyer, would be tough for the Cardinals to contain. The two had nine kills apiece to lead the Flyers.

This was Meyer's first game back from suspension for playing with a Swiss pro team last summer.

Ball State started the home weekend with a dominant win over MIVA rival Clarke on Friday. The Crusaders never showed much resistance, as the Cardinals won in straight sets, 30-18, 30-20, 30-18.

Before the game, Walton spoke of his team's well-rounded attack. The balance showed against Clarke. Eight Cardinals had a kill and 11 players had at least one dig in the match. Senior outside attacker Josh Lee had 10 points for Ball State, including seven kills.
