CARDINAL SWEETNESS

Ball State senior tailback sets school career rushing record.

Marcus Merriweather said he knew he was getting good yards. He also knew that he needed only 136 yards to become Ball State's all-time career rushing leader.

One thing he did not know - whether or not he had actually broken the record.

Merriweather explained that he figured when he did break the record the game would be stopped, or the feat would, at the very least, be announced.

It wasn't, and Merriweather found out with the rest of the crowd in the closing five seconds of Saturday's game against Western Michigan.

"It's sad that they didn't stop the game or at least announce it. I had no idea," Merriweather said. "I figured we had some good yards going but we were clueless.

"You would think that if you set a record that they would at least announce it for a moment"

When asked if he was bothered by the fact, Merriweather said, "Not at all. It was just something that I thought they would recognize but they didn't."

In the Cardinal win over Western Michigan, 17-7, Merriweather became Ball State's all-time career leading rusher as he ran for his best game of the season tallying 214 yards rushing.

Going into the contest he needed only 136 yards to break the record formerly held by Bernie Parmalee. Merriweather started Saturday's game with 3,348 career yards and ended the afternoon with 3,562 streaking past the former first place total of 3,483, set during the 1987-1990 seasons.

"I'm really really happy for him," Ball State coach Bill Lynch said. "What a great kid he is. For him to get that record today, here at home is great.

"He is as much of a consistent football player as I have ever been around. You are going to get the same effort, the same look the same everything week after week after week."

After the game, Merriweather was most pleased with the win for the team. However, with the win aside, he was happy that he was able to set the record in front of a 12,000 plus crowd at Ball State Stadium.

"I think it was important to do it at home because a lot of fans
