Wear Muncie out

It started as an off-the-wall idea.

When the American Advertising Federation began making t-shirts four years ago with MUNCIE! on the front in bold type, the group was not prepared for the demand they would receive.

"We used to only order 100," President Matt Irving said.

The group only sold them for one day at the Scramble Light. Later, students told the group that more people wanted the shirts, but did not have money with them on that day.

"Last year we sold 150," said AAF member Jennifer Lawson. "We had one left over."

This year, the group is prepared for the sales. They will be selling for two days outside the Ball State Bookstore, from noon to 4 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Irving said the group ordered 200 shirts.

"We chose family weekend so we could be more visible than we had in the past," Irving said.

Aside from extended sale times and increased supply, the group has opened an e-mail account - muncieshirts@hotmail.com - devoted to additional shirt orders.

Lawson said students told her they found the shirts funny.

"Usually, people come up to us and ask 'How did you guys come up with that?' " Lawson said. "People really liked it because some feel Muncie is somewhat of a joke."

Lawson said that she has never heard of the shirts offending someone.

"You could take it both ways," Lawson said. "You could wear it with pride or wear it as a joke."

During last year's Homecoming, AAF gave a shirt to David Letterman's stage manager Biff Henderson. Lawson said the group has yet to see the shirt on the air.

"We thought of sending some more and seeing what happens," Lawson said. "I think Dave would think it was funny."

Until the group makes TV fame, they will continue to sell the shirts on Ball State's campus.
