Midnight Mania kicks off basketball season tonight

Midnight marks the first official day the men's and women's basketball teams can practice for the upcoming season, beginning Midnight Mania for 2002.

The third-annual event will take place tonight at Worthen Arena, the doors will open at 10 p.m. The event provides various activities to students and Muncie community members prior to the teams coming out for practice at midnight.

The first 1,000 fans coming will receive free shirts and both basketball teams will be on hand at 10:30 p.m. signing autographs.

The men's team will try to expand on last year's 23-12 mark which included a Mid-American West division title, a run into the Elite Eight in the NIT's, and defeating No. 3 Kansas and No. 4 UCLA at the Maui Invitational.

The women's team won the MAC West title as well with a 24-8 record last season. The Cards tied for the best record in the whole conference, and head coach Tracy Roller was named MAC Coach of the Year.

The women will begin the season with their first ever appearance in the Preseason WNIT against No. 11 Kansas State November 15.
